The iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter, also referred to as VGA adapter, allows you to watch slideshows and movies on a TV, monitor, projector, or LCD display that uses a VGA connector.
There are two things to know about the VGA adapter. The first being that the TV or monitor that you are trying to show the slideshow or video to MUST have a VGA connection. Most monitors will have the VGA connector. Some new monitors may not have the VGA but an adapter may be available. Some new TVs have a VGA connection and are also referred to as a “RGB” input.
The second thing to know about the VGA adapter is that at this time, only specific applications that are setup to utilize the video out capability will send the video over to your TV or monitor. There are more and more apps that are configured to work with the VGA adapter. Some of the more popular apps that work: Keynote (when playing a slideshow), Videos, YouTube, and Netflix.
The third thing to know is that if you are using the VGA adapter to an HDTV with a video app, such as Netflix, there video will not be able to fill in the entire screen on your HDTV. There will be black bars that surround the video. Additionally, you will want to look into an audio adapter to plug into your speaker system. The iPad speakers are good, but not good enough to fill a room while watching a movie. I use a headphone jack cable to RCA cables which plug into my surround sound system and the quality is fine.
One of the highest demand applications for use with the VGA adapter is Safari. While Safari doesn’t utilize the VGA adapter (except for when video is embedded on the screen) we will be reviewing an app that does just that very soon.
